Cognate to Yamaguchi and Tanegashima いら ira; Okinawan (Shuri) いらー iiraa; Okinawan (Kudaka) いらぶ irabu; Minna いら ira; and Taketomi いれェん irën "jellyfish". Ultimately from the Japonic root いら【刺・棘・蕁】 ira, meaning "sting". Compare the related standard Japanese terms: いらくさ【刺草】 irakusa "nettle" (lit. "stinging grass"); いらが・イラガ【刺蛾】 iraga "Iraga Slug Moth" (Monema flavescens) (lit. "stinging moth"); いらだち【いら立ち・苛立ち】 iradachi "irritation"; and いらいら iraira "irritating".
