Derived from the root ばそ【芭蕉】 baso "banana", cognate to Amami ばしゃ basha "banana", standard Japanese ばしょう bashou "Japanese Fiber Banana" and Mandarin 【芭蕉】 bājiāo "plaintain; banana"; followed by the term ない【生い】 nai "fruit".
