- Banana; especially of the species Musa basjoo, otherwise known as the Japanese Fiber Banana, the Hardy Banana or the Japanese Banana; or the species Musa balbisiana, Musa ryukyuensis or Musa liukiuensis, otherwise known as the Ito-Basho or the Ryukyu Fiber Banana.
Etymology
Cognate to the Japanese term ばしょう【芭蕉】 bashou, which refers specifically to the Japanese Fiber Banana; and the Mandarin term 【芭蕉】 bājiāo "plaintain; banana". Related to the Okinawan term ばさない basanai, formed from the root cognate ばさ【芭蕉】 basa "banana" followed by the term ない【生い】 nai "fruit".
