きんか【金瓜】

kinka

Definition

Noun

  1. Any pumpkin or squash of the genus Cucurbita, especially of the species Cucurbita moschata (which includes the Neck Pumpkin and the Butternut Squash, among others).

Etymology

Cognate to Wakayama きんか kinka; Okinawan ちんくゎ chinkwa; and the obsolete Japanese term きんか【金瓜】 kinka "pumpkin; gourd" (Middle Japanese きんくゎ kinkwa). Ultimately from Chinese 【金瓜】 "pumpkin" (cf. Mandarin jīnguā; Cantonese gam1 gwaa1; Eastern Min gĭng-guă; Hokkien kim-koe, kim-koa), pronounced *kim-kwae in Middle Chinese, itself a compound of 【金】 "gold" and 【瓜】 "gourd".

Historical attestations:

  • The Okinawan language dictionary (沖縄語典, 1896), by Masayo Nakamoto, records the spelling ちんくわ chinkuwa.
