Historically recorded in Gonza's works (ca. early 18th century) under the spelling киуи (kiui). Cognate to Kagoshima きうい kiui and きゅい kyui; Kikai きうい kiui; Okinawan きーうい kii'ui; standard Japanese きゅうり【胡瓜・黄瓜】 kyuuri "cucumber". Ultimately from 【胡・黄】 ki and うり【瓜】 uri "gourd".
