Cognate to Kikai and Yoron ぴとぅ pitu; Kikai and Kunigami (Takazato) ふぃとぅ fitu; Amami ふとぅ futu; Kunigami (Kin) ひーとぅい hiitui; Okinawan ふぃーとぅ fiitu and ひーとぅ hiitu ; Yonaguni ひとぅ hitu "dolphin". Attested in the Konkoukenshuu (混効験集, 1711), "Words of the Royal Palace", under the spelling へと feto.

Likely derived from the Chinese term 【海豚】 "dolphin" (cf. Mandarin hǎitún; Cantonese hoi2 tyun4; Hakka hói-thùn; Wu he den (T2); and Min Nan hái-thûnhai2 tung5hái-tu and hái-ti).
