Etymology

From the honorific prefix おみ【御御・御々】 omi- and あふり【煽り】 afuri "swaying, flapping, shaking".

Historical Ryukyuan attestations

  • おもろさうし Omoro Saushi (1531-1623) records "あおり", "あふり", "あけのみあおり", "嶋うちみあおり", "たまのみあおり" and "又くもこみあおり".
  • 混効験集 Konkoukenshuu (1711), "Words of the Royal Palace", records "「おみあふり」冷傘".

Notes

The expected modern reflex would likely be *(u)mi-ooi or *(u)mi-u(u)i.
