Etymology

Origin uncertain. The expression is said to have historically come from the jargon of Satsuma swordsmen. Several theories exist:

  1. It originates from the expression ちえすてよ【知恵捨てよ】 chie sute yo "throw away your wisdom".
  2. It originates from Korean 좋다 jota (Yale cōhta) "to be good", from Middle Korean 둏〯다〮 tyǒhtá. Compare its usage in Korean Pansori.
