Etymology
Origin uncertain. The expression is said to have historically come from the jargon of Satsuma swordsmen. Several theories exist:
- It originates from the expression ちえすてよ【知恵捨てよ】 chie sute yo "throw away your wisdom".
- It originates from Korean 좋다 jota (Yale cōhta) "to be good", from Middle Korean 둏〯다〮 tyǒhtá. Compare its usage in Korean Pansori.
