うそまつ【嘘松】

usomatsu

Definition

Noun

  1. (Online slang) A post on social media that contains a fabricated story or a lie. Fabricated story; unbelievable story; unrealistic story; farfetched story; lie.

Etymology

First attested around 2016. Generally believed to originate from a story posted on Twitter (now "X") where the poster claimed to have met someone who looked like the character おそまつ【おそ松】 Osomatsu from the 2015 comedy show おそまつさん【おそ松さん】 Osomatsu-san). The story was deemed so unbelievable, other users started calling it ウソまつ【ウソ松】 usomatsu. The term grew into an online meme, with other users posting fake sightings of Osomatsu, and was eventually used to refer more broadly to any unrealistic or fabricated post.
