Historical attestations:

  • Dictionarivm latino lvsitanicvm, ac Iaponicvm (1595) records "Catharticus, a, um. Lus. Cousa, ou mezinha pera purgar. Iap. Cudaxi, xayacu."
  • Vocabulario da Lingoa de Iapam (1603), aka Nippo Jisho (日葡辞書), records "Xayacu. Purga, ou mezinha que faz purgar.", meaning "Purgative, or medicine that purges".
