Etymology

Cognate with Kagoshima ちょか choka; Okinawan (Shuri, Naha, Nakijin) ちゅーかー chuukaa; Miyako (Uruka) ちゅーか chuuka; Yaeyama (Hateruma) ぞっか zokka; and Yonaguni すが suga "teapot". Of Kagoshima origin.

Historical attestations:

  • Transactions of the Asiatic Society of Japan (1881), page 34, records "[Satsuma dialect] Chaka ... [Yedo] dobin ... teapot".
  • 沖縄語典 Okinawa goten (Okinawan language dictionary) (1896), by Masayo Nakamoto, records "「ちやーかー」急須(キフス)、沖縄茶ヲ入ルルちゃーかー(茶家)ト云ヒ酒ヲ入ルルヲちうーかー(酒家)云ヘルヲ近来訛リデ茶家ヲ酒家ト云フ", loosely translated as "A teapot used to hold Okinawan tea is called 'chaakaa', and one used to hold alcohol is called 'chuukaa'. The shift from 'chaakaa' to 'chuukaa' is recent."
