てぃち【鉄・鐵】

tichi

Pronunciation: [tit͡ɕi]

Definition

Noun

  1. (Element) Iron

Etymology

Cognate to standard Japanese てつ【鉄・鐵】 tetsu "iron". Ultimately from Chinese 【鐵・铁】 (cf. Mandarin tiě; Cantonese tit3; Hakka thiet; Min Dong tiék; Hokkien thih and thiat; Teochew tih4; Wu thiq; Sino-Korean 철 cheol; Sino-Vietnamese thiết and sắt), reconstructed as /tʰet̚/ for Middle Chinee and /*l̥ˤik/ or /*l̥ʰiːɡ/ for Old Chinese. Presumed cognate with Tibetan ལྕགས (lcags), giving the Proto-Sino-Tibetan reconstruction *hljak.
