Etymology

Derived from the slang term イケメン・イケめん【イケ面】 ikemen, meaning "cool; awesome; handsome; energetic (guy)", and formed through a play on words with the root いく【育】 iku- "to raise, to care for (a child)" and the English term "men", written in kanji using the symbol for man 【男】. Attested since 2009, commercialized since 2010.
