Cognate to Kumamoto ほめく homeku "to be humid"; Tanegashima ほなく honaku and ほめく homeku "to be hot"; and Okinawan ふみちゅん fumichun "to be muggy". Possibly from 【火】 ho- "fire; burning; heat" and めく meku "to show signs of". Compare ほてる【火照る】 hoteru "to feel hot" (from "fire; burning; heat" and "to shine").
