なまー【今】

namaa

Pronunciation: [namaː]

Definition

Noun, Adverb

  1. Now; at the present moment; currently

Etymology

Attested under the entry なま nama "now" in the 1711 混効験集 Konkoukenshuu Okinawan dictionary (p. 5). Likely derived from *ima via palatal assimilation, resulting in *ʔimya > *ʔmya*na (cf. ita > cha, ida > ja, mya > na, inu > nu, etc.), followed by a re-appending of the temporal-locative ending -ma. Compare the Yoron form [ʔnjama].
