Cognate to Kikai すす susu; Okinawan しーし shiishi; Yonaguni ちち chichi; standard Japanese すす【煤】 susu "soot". Likely cognate to Korean 숟 sut "charcoal; soot", historically recorded under the form 수ᇧ (Yale: swusk) in the 1459 Worin seokbo (月印釋譜 / 월인석보). Unclear relation with Japanese すみ【炭】 sumi "charcoal". Compare also Korean 숯불 sutbul and Japanese すみび【炭火】 sumibi "charcoal fire".
