Etymology
Borrowed from the Sanskrit word अर्बुद arbuda "swelling; mass; tumour; growth". Historically transliterated as 【頞浮陀】 abuda, a form still used in Amakusa (Kumamoto), but which later became あぼた abota and いぼた ibota in Kanagawa, and あばた【痘痕】 abata elsewhere in Japan. The meaning of "pockmark" came from associating the word with the scarring left by smallpox.
