なまり【鉛】 : namari | define meaning
namari
Definition
Noun
- Lead (Pb)
Etymology
Cognate to Iwashi Island (Hiroshima) なまる namaru; Kagoshima なまい namai; Nakijin (Kunigami) なまーりー namaarii; Okinawan なまり namari and なまい namai; and standard Japanese なまり【鉛】 namari "lead".
Historically spelled 奈万利 *nama(n)ri. Possibly from the nominal form of the verb なまる【鈍る】 namaru "to become dull". Seemingly cognate to the Koguryo word for lead 【內勿・乃勿・那勿】: *nam¨ɔr (N. Tranter, 2012), *namwul (K.-M. Lee and S. R. Ramsey, 2011) or *nəymur ~ *namur (C. Beckwith, 2007). Possibly also connected to the modern Korean word 납 nap "lead".
Historical Ryukyuan attestations
- 沖縄語典 Okinawa goten (Okinawan language dictionary) (1896), by Masayo Nakamoto, records "「なまり」鉛(ナマリ)".
