いこ【鱗】

iko

Pronunciation: [iko]

Definition

Noun

  1. Scale (of a fish or reptile)
  2. Dandruff

Etymology

Cognate to Akita うるこ uruko; Miyagi うろご urogo and おろこ oroko; Yamagata うろご urogo; Oita いら ira; Miyazaki いれこ ireko and いりこ iriko; Kagoshima いこ iko and いらこ irako; Tanegashima うるこ uruko and いりこ iriko; Okinawan いりち irichi; and standard Japanese うろこ【鱗】 uroko, meaning "scale (of a fish or reptile)" and, in many regions, "dandruff". Historically also attested under the form いろこ iroko in Japanese. Related to the historical word いろくづ irokudzu (いろくず irokuzu), meaning "(fish) scale" or "scaly animal; fish". Possibly also related to the word いらか【甍】 iraka "roof tile".

Notes

Historically recorded in Gonza's works (ca. early 18th century) under the spelling ирко (irko).
