Etymology

Variant: とんぼう tonbou. Possibly of Chinese origin, compare: Cantonese 塘尾 tong4 mei5*1 "dragonfly". Alternatively of Japanese or Sino-Japanese origin, possibly from とぶ【飛ぶ】 tobu "to fly" and the rendaku form of 【羽】 ha "wing", or ぼう【棒】 bou "pole; rod". The first morpheme may alternatively be connected to 【田】 ta "rice field".
