Etymology

Derived from intervocalic voicing of あか【赤】 aka, meaning "red" and by extension "newborn", and likely vowel raising of the noun suffix 【目・眼】 me, roughly meaning "look", "appearance", or "somewhat" (cf. Japanese あかめ【赤目・赤眼】 akame "red eyes"). Related to the standard Japanese terms of the same meaning: あかご【赤子】 akago, あかちゃん【赤ちゃん】 akachan, and あかんぼう【赤ん坊】 akanbou.
