  1. A dive performed at the start of a backstroke or butterfly swim, or the swift turn or kick made in a pool when changing directions.

Etymology

This technique is named after Jesse Vassallo, a former Puerto Rican swimmer who most notably competed for the United States at the 1984 Olympic Games.
