~たい

tai

Definition

Suffix

  1. Used to add emphasis to preceding word or utterance.
    1. よかたい【良かたい
      yokatai
"It's quite good", "Is it not good?"
    2. そぎゃんたい
      sogyan-tai
      "That kind of thing"

Etymology

Possibly related to the ~たい -tai ending in standard Japanese expressions such as おもたい【重たい】 omotai "heavy; massive" or ねむたい【眠たい】 nemutai "sleepy", which ultimately derives from the adjective いたい【痛い】 itai "painful". However, there is no differential implication of objectivity or subjectivity in the Kumamoto ending.
