Etymology

Attested as early as in the 1711 混効験集 Konkoukenshuu Okinawan dictionary (p. 4), under the primary spelling けふ kefu, with notes indicating the pronunciation is typically キヨ kiyo [kiyu] in songs, and チヤウ chiyau [chuu] in the common language. Attested again in the 1896 Okinawan language dictionary (沖縄語典), by Masayo Nakamoto, page 36, under the spelling ちふ chifu.

Cognate to Akita ちょー choo; Nagasaki きゅー kyuu; Kagoshima きゅ kyu; Koshikijima きゅー kyuu, くー kuu, きゅ kyu; Kikai しゅー shuu; Amami きゅー kyuu; Yoron しゅー shuu; Okinoerabu ひゅー hyuu; Kunigami くー kuu; Okinawan ちゅー chuu; Itoman くー kuu; Miyako きゅー kyuu; Tarama きう kiu; Yonaguni すー suu; and standard Japanese きょう【今日】 kyou "today". Historically written as けふ kefu in Classical Japanese writing.
