Cognate to Amami (Setouchi) めィでぃ mïdi; Okinoerabu, Yoron and Okinawan みじ miji; Yonaguni みん min "water". Also cognate to Akita むぃづぃ mïdzï; Nagasaki (Gotou) and Kagoshima (Minamikyushu) みん min; Kagoshima みっ miq; and standard Japanese みず【水】 mizu "water". Historically attested under the spelling みづ【水】 midu in Japanese.
Historical attestations for Ryukyuan:
- Attested in the Konkoukenshuu (混効験集, 1711), "Words of the Royal Palace", under the spelling みづ midu (#2 p. 18).
