ななそち【七十・70】

nanasochi

Pronunciation: [nanasot͡ɕi]

Definition

Noun

  1. (Archaism) Seventy

Etymology

Attested in the 1711 混効験集 Konkoukenshuu Okinawan dictionary (p. 14), under the spelling ナナソチ nanasochi. Cognate to the historically attested Japanese forms ななそ nanaso and ななそじ nanasoji "seventy".

Notes

The expected modern Okinawan reflex would be ななすち *nanasuchi. The Sinitic terms しちじゅう shichijuu and ななじゅう nanajuu have, however, replaced it in the common language.
