Etymology

Derived from the expression おおきにありがとう【大きに有り難う】 ookini arigatou "thank you very much", where ookini served as an adverb of quantity meaning "very much; greatly; a lot".

Notes

Though commonly attributed to Osaka, this expression is encountered in most dialects west of Kanto, all the way down through Kyushu. Its usage in modern media has also contributed to its further diffusion throughout Japan.
