かなまイ

kanamaï

Pronunciation: [kanamaɨ~kanamaɯ̈]

Definition

Noun

  1. Head

Etymology

Cognate to the Tarama and Nagahama forms かなまる kanamaru. The various reflexes in Miyako indicate the historical Ryukyuan form ressembled *kanamari, thus cognate to the standard Japanese term かなまり【鋺・金椀】 kanamari, a "small metal bowl". This relation may be comparable to the Northern Ryukyuan term かまち kamachi "head" (related to Miyako-Yaeyama かまちィ kamachï "cheeks"), which seemingly incorporates the root かま【釜】 kama, an "iron pot".
