Origin unclear. Perhaps related to the standard Japanese term こうら【甲羅】 koura "carapace" or から【殻】 kara "shell" (cf. Okinawan がら gara "shell"). Alternatively, derived from the honorific prefix ご【御】 go- and the noun うら【末】 ura "top; tip", etymologically related to うれ ure "(plant) shoot".
