  1. A term used to refer to the main portion of Japan North of the Amami Islands, including the islands of Kyushu, Shikoku, and Honshu; Mainland Japan; inner Japan; Japan proper.
    1. なんはないちの人?

      "Are you (a person) from the mainland?"

Etymology

Cognate to standard Japanese and Okinawan ないち【内地】 naichi, which was a term commonly used to distinguish the main portion of Japan from Okinawa and Hokkaido up until the end of World War II. Today, the term ほんど【本土】 hondo is preferred when distinguishing Japan proper from outlying areas.
