Etymology
Historical variants: げんぎょ gengyo and ごんご gongo. Ultimately from the Chinese compound 【言語・言语】 "speech+language" (cf. Mandarin yányǔ "spoken language, speech"; Cantonese jin4 jyu5; Hakka ngièn-ngî; Min Nan giân-gí and giân-gú; Korean 언어 eoneo "language"; Dungan gānyǔ "language"; and Vietnamese ngôn ngữ "language"). From Middle Chinese *ngiæn ngiǔ. No known variant of this term occurs in Ryukyuan. Related to the Chinese compound 【語言・语言】 "language+speech" (cf. Mandarin yǔyán "language"; Hakka ngî-ngièn; Min Nan gí-giân and gú-giân; Min Dong ngṳ̄-ngiòng).
