はよ【早よ・早】

hayo

Pronunciation: [hajo]

Definition

Adverb

  1. Quickly, hurriedly, rapidly, expressly

Etymology

Derived from the historical form はやく【早く】 hayaku, still used in modern standard Japanese. The adverbial ending く -ku later reduced to う -u in Western Japan, where the form became はやう hayau and later coalesced to はよう hayou. In Kagoshima exceptionally, all long vowels reduced to short ones, giving the modern form はよ hayo.
