Derived from the pan-Ryukyuan pronoun わん【我ん】 wan. Related to the Japanese pronouns 【我・吾】 wa and われ【我・吾・我れ・吾れ】 ware "I, me; you; oneself", among others. Cognate to the archaic Japanese pronoun わぬ【我・吾】 wanu "I, me, myself".
