ninibugu
Definition
Noun
- A thick, straw mat woven from the dried leaves of rice plants.
Etymology
The word nini is of uncertain origin. However, the stem ぶぐ bugu is related to the Okinawan term びーぐむしる【備後筵】biigumushiru "straw mat", itself derived from びーぐいー【備後藺】biiguyii "(plant) soft rush" and むしる【筵】 mushiru "woven mat", which is cognate to Yaeyama びんぐむすぃ bingumusï; and standard Japanese びんごむしろ bingo mushiro.
