Etymology

Cognate to Kagoshima いっご iggo; and standard Japanese いちご【苺・莓】 ichigo "strawberry". Also cognate to Amami いちゅぷ ichupu; Okinoerabu いちゅび ichubi; Okinawan いちゅび ichubi or いちゅびー ichubii "strawberry". Historically attested as 【伊致寐姑】 ichibiko in the Nihon Shoki (720 CE), 【一比古】 ichibiko in the Shinsen Jikyō (898-901 CE), and later 【伊知古】 ichiko (ichigo) in the Wamyō ruijushō (911-983 CE).
