さと【砂糖】

sato

Definition

Noun

  1. Sugar

Etymology

Derived from the root さ【砂】 sa- "sand; grain" via Chinese 【砂・沙】 "sand; grit" (cf. Cantonese sa1; Mandarin shā; Min Nan sa1, sua1, sê1; Wu so; Korean 사 sa; Japanese さ sa, しゃ sha; Vietnamese sa, ); and the noun suffix た(ん)【糖】 ta(n) "sweetener; sugar" via Chinese 【糖】 "sugar; candy; sweets" (cf. Cantonese tong2, tong4; Mandarin táng; Korean 당 dang, 탕 tang; Modern Japanese とう tou; Middle Japanese たう tau;  Vietnamese đường). Cognate to standard Japanese さとう【砂糖】 satou "sugar"; and Mandarin 【砂糖・沙糖】 shātáng "Brown sugar".

Notes

Historically recorded in Gonza's works (ca. early 18th century) under the spelling сато (sato).
