しお【塩】

shio

Definition

Noun

  1. Salt (sodium chloride); table salt

Etymology

Dialectally pronounced [ɕiʷo]. Historically attested under the spellings しを shiwo and しほ shiho, presumably pronounced しぽ shipo in Old Japanese. Cognate to the Ainu word シッポ sippo "salt". Possibly related to the first syllable in the Korean word 소금 sogeum "salt", attested under the spelling 소곰 swokwom (Yale romanization) in the Wongakgyeong eonhae (圓覺經諺解 /원각경언해), in 1465.
